My mum called me yesterday to wish us a happy 4th of July. Now, ever since I moved over here, I think my mum has become just a bit obsessed with America. It's as if the country can do nothing wrong in her eyes which we know is rubbish and everything just fascinates her. You'd think she'd have gotten used to it a bit by now, seeing as how she's come to visit a few times since I moved over. But, as mums do, she insisted on chatting for a while. Which would be fine, of course, if she hadn't called in the evening. Her evening. Needles to say, it was pretty early for us. So I probably wasn't as chatty as she wanted me to be. She did realize about fifteen minutes in that there was a rather large time difference. She felt terrible, and I couldn't just let her hang up feeling bad. So I talked with her a bit more.
A whole update on the phoning habits of my mum. I'm such an interesting fellow, let me tell you. Or maybe it's just the sleep deprivation. Who knows? Anyway. I do hope everyone had a good holiday.

So. I've been a bit...well, spaced lately. How's all the wedding stuff coming? Need any help? Need a drink?

Apparently my sister's gone off and gotten her a new boyfriend that she hasn't bothered to tell me about. I don't appreciate this.. Now, I'm all happy for her and everything, but she's running off to Florida or somewhere with this man for the weekend. Quite a last minute trip if you ask me. And she seemed to have forgotten an important detail until just this morning. So my nephew, Liam, will be spending the weekend with Amy and myself again. He was just here weekend before last, but that's fine. Guinness gets terribly excited when he's here, since he's got about as much energy so they can run around in the garden and wear each other out. Of course, now I keep thinking of watching my nephew in a different light. I suppose it's a bit of practice for when our baby is born. Oi, I still can't believe it.

My nephew is spending the weekend with me while his mum goes off to some bachelorette party with some friends of hers. I think they're going off to Atlantic City, which isn't the best place to take a child. And, of course, taking a child to a weekend party like that is just bad form anyway. So I get to watch him, which is pretty excited. He's getting so big, and even though they live in the city, I feel like I don't get to see him very often. He has requested that we see 'Monsters vs. Aliens' movie while he's here, though I'm guessing he'll spend most of his time playing with the dogs.

So my dad called me today. Which is a bit odd, since it's never my dad who calls, always my mum. That got me a bit worried that something might be wrong. But he was just calling to let me know that the magazine I used to work for back in London, before I came to Spent, had ceased publication. That's right. After 22 years, Arena Magazine is no more. Which is quite a shame, since it was always such a good magazine. Guess it's a good thing that I found a new job when I did, eh? Of course, that's been almost two years ago that I left. Time does fly.

So I know its old news by now, but I keep reading articles about that woman who had the eight babies at once, and then already had six children at home. I have nothing against large families, believe me. Some of my best mates as a boy were from big families, and I always found it a bit fascinating. Still, all of the ones I knew had a mother and a father, as well as extended family who could lend a hand. This woman? Has no husband or even a boyfriend to help her out. She's run her parents ragged, lives off the state, and still chose to have more children. Now, I think it can easily be said that the woman is more than slightly insane. The pictures of her home, the stories about what she's tried to do to get more money. I'm just wondering about those poor children. What kind of childhood can they have, being just one of fourteen?
I'm grateful my parents only had me and my sister.

My dog hurt his foot today. I don't know what he did, but he was running about in the garden and somehow managed to break a toe nail. He broke it right up near his actual foot, so it was very painful. We had to take him to the veterinarian and let them cut the rest of it off. They had to sedate him, since he's a slightly insane dog all the time anyway, so he's spent most of the day lying about like he's got a hangover. It would actually be amusing if I didn't feel terrible about his foot hurting him.

I've decided that the best thing about living here in New York is the sheer amount of stage shows playing at any given time. Sadly, a lot of great shows have recently, and not quite as many in the wings to premiere. Still, plenty of good shows still playing. I've got half a mind to go and see 'Wicked'. I did see the show once when I first moved to New York, but its gone through a few cast changes and it'd be interesting to see how the current cast stands up.

I took a trip across the state early last week. I'm not usually one for domestic travel, but the national RENT tour was making a stop, and there's no way in hell I was missing that. As expected, it was fantastic and I'm sure Joey would agree. It has got to be my all-time favourite musical, and it was great to see it once more. It helps ease the pain of it closing on Broadway a little bit.
I'm afraid that's been the highlight of my two weeks. Amy and myself are all moved into our house, which is quite a relief. I'm not a fan of unpacking. The dogs are also loving having a garden, so its well worth it. I did have to teach Guinness that digging was not appropriate.
Oh, back to a previous topic. If there are any other Broadway fans, I've got a couple of tickets for the February 6th preview of the upcoming Guys and Dolls production. It's a classic show, and a great one. Tickets are free, but you do have to deal with Amy and myself for the night! I've only got four extra.

So! Amy and I are back in the US. Actually, we got back yesterday, but we pretty much crashed and slept for half a day as soon as we got home. That's the downside to traveling is the exhaustion you get. Which doesn't make much sense if you think about it, since all you really do is sit on a plane. I think I'm still operating on Scotland time, however, as I'm still feeling more than a bit tired. Still, it felt great to be able to come home to what is going to be our home. I'm sure Amy has already posted about it. It's a lovely home, and I really think we'll enjoy it there. The garden is a plus, since we've got to have some space for the dogs. Guinness, I know, will love it.

Tonight's a full moon, which I always have loved. I don't know why, but I've always enjoyed looking up into the sky and seeing it. Of course, I don't know how well one can see it in the city. I'd assume it wouldn't be too badly, since it's the moon and all. Unlike a meteor storm, which is another fantastic sight to behold. One that you don't get in the city very well.
Also interesting is the belief that that the full moon brings out some strange behaviour in people. I know that in London, they always put more police officers on the streets during a full moon, because they say that the crime rates go up. What do you think? Do stranger things tend to happen during a full moon, or do you think that's rubbish?

I watched 'Finding Nemo' with my nephew last night, and now I can't stop quoting it. But there are so many good lines in it. Something about those Disney/Pixar movies; they're all fantastic. And I can't even blame my nephew on my watching the rest of them.

As some of you might have read, Amy and myself are in the process of buying a home. Well, in that we put in a bid and are just waiting to hear back from the sellers. This whole waiting bit is more than a little unnerving. I suppose this may be what it's always like, but I've never actually bought a home before. Negotiated rent for a flat, yes, but not negotiating price on a house. Still, it's a very lovely place and I do hope the offer is accepted. The garden was a major plus, as I'm sure Guinness is quite tired of being cooped up in my place during the day when I'm at work.
On a different note, I do love the score to the movie "The Assassination of Jesse James". There's a lovely, haunting quality about the music. I can't say I cared too much for the movie; I thought it was far too long and too slow. But the music is excellent.

BBC.co.uk redid the design of their website some time ago, and I have to say that I still don't like it. I have so much trouble finding where I need to go. Not because its difficult, but because I'm still not used to it and find myself staring at the page with a blank mind. But I always manage to find what I need. My favourite bit so far is the daily photos of Scotland that they put up. All the nostalgia. I'm going to have to make sure to see about going home for the Christmas holidays.

I don't know if any of you remember my last post, but I did end up taking my sister to a Broadway show. We saw 'Young Frankenstein', which was amazing. They had amazing sets and an amazing cast and the songs were all pretty funny. In short, I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a laugh or three.
Oh, and I just read that there's a new trailer for the new James Bond movie. I'm going to have to go find that now. Other than that? Well, my life's just not that exciting. Except I think Amy and I might be finding a place together?

[16 Sep 2008|10:02pm] |
I decided last week (with a lot of helpful hinting from my sister) to take my sister to a play on Broadway. She's been a few times before, but she just loves the theatre. And she finally found a sitter that she's comfortable enough with to leave Liam for a few hours. Which really, is quite a good thing, since she's not really been able to get out and do much for herself since getting a flat of her own. All the poor thing does is work and come home late to spend a few hours with her son. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but I think she's just dying for a night to herself.
But back to my problem at hand. There are so many good shows playing on Broadway. I'm personally leaning towards 'Young Frankenstein', if only because I'm a fan of Mel Brooks and have yet to see that show. Which, I think I might just go see that one anyway. If anyone else is interested, we might be able to work something out? But, does anyone have any particular show suggestions? The only requirement is that it actually be a show on Broadway. As much as I love the smaller productions, Mary's insisting on Broadway.
